There’s nothing we love more here at Helen Carter Weddings than drooling over fabulous cake designs on the web (actually, that’s a lie, there’s nothing we love more than eating cake, but browsing comes a close second!). Therefore, we were delighted to come across US cake pop designer Lauren Caveness whose company Sweet Lauren Cakes produces some of the most stunning displays we have seen for a while.

Cake pops are a relatively new phenomenon here in the UK and have started to be used at weddings as quirky and tasty favours. Lauren takes this one step further by substituting the wedding cake for a bespoke cake pop display, which can be tiered to mirror the traditional cake.

With sixty under-twelves invited to our Summer Fete wedding reception, we didn’t need further excuses to plan a sweetie buffet as part of our celebrations. The idea of an old fashioned pick and mix stall also fitted in well with our theme, and so I set about planning the spread. I had browsed the internet for inspiration and found that sweetie tables fell into two distinct camps – the sophisticated, colour themed and very ordered display or the retro, “sweets of our youth” type.

With the aforesaid number of children any elegant display wasn’t going to look that way for long, and also our green, white and red colour scheme didn’t tend to lend itself to limiting the colours of sweets chosen, so I decided that a more eclectic mix of treats was the order of the day.

Back in July I received a message on Twitter from the lovely Rebecca at Chez Bec – did I want to help style and organise the September launch party for her new wedding dress boutique, Isabella Grace? Erm, let me just think about that for all of 2 seconds…YES!

Rebecca kindly loaned some of her beautiful jewellery and head pieces for my vintage peach photo shoot earlier in the year, and I knew she was working on something special from her tweets and sneak peek photos on Twitter. Plus having chatted with her on the phone about her vision for her boutique I knew this was something I definitely wanted to be a part of!

I was absolutely over the moon to have recently had my vintage peach photo shoot featured on Rock My Wedding. Some of you may recall that this shoot was also published in the September/October issue of You & Your Wedding magazine, but Charlotte has now shown even more images from this amazing experience, including two previously unseen looks created with our second model Megan.

Earlier this year I met with the lovely Chanelle from Segerius-Bruce to discuss an idea I had for a photo shoot. This was my first styled shoot, and I was being fairly ambitious with what I wanted to achieve – it had to be heavily detail-oriented, incorporate two different styles within the main vintage theme, include an outdoors element and provide brides with inspiration that was realistically achievable for their own wedding design. No pressure there then!
It was clear from my meeting with Chanelle that she was on board with my ideas from the word go, and in back in May, after several weeks of careful planning, I headed off to the George in Rye with a fabulous team of suppliers to bring my design to life. And here are the results, spread over 8 pages in the latest issue of You & Your Wedding magazine!

Earlier this week I posted some photos from The Wedding Sanctuary held at Somerset House in March, and today I want to share the designs from the Inspiration Zone in more detail. Without a doubt this was one of my favourite aspects of the Sanctuary – ok, so I’m a bit biased because I was involved in this area (!), but on a more serious note no other wedding show I’ve been to has showcased so many different table settings in this way. It was great to see brides taking in all the ideas and chatting with their fiancés and friends over a glass of champagne about how they might be able to incorporate them into their own wedding designs.

Five UKAWP members devised their own themes for a table setting, and worked hard to find the perfect linens, tableware, stationery and flowers to bring their designs to life. In the centre of the room was an ‘Elegant Glamour’ themed table with a stunning teal and silver colour scheme – I loved the attention to detail and the laser cut skyline menus from Cutture were just inspired:

Lighting plays a huge part in creating the right atmosphere for a wedding, but it usually isn’t something that’s high on the priority list or even thought about until the last minute. However, using lighting in the right way can make a massive difference in transforming a plain venue, and is also a great way of complementing the mood for different stages of the day – for example, a subtle and romantic glow is perfect for the ceremony, but how about going for something a bit funky for your evening party? There are lots of ways in which lighting can be used throughout a wedding, and today I want to share a few of my particular favourites.

Velvet Weddings launched their online wedding store earlier this year, which is jam-packed with gorgeous decorations and accessories. I recently received their wooden love heart and metal love birds heart, which would be perfect for a rustic or country garden theme wedding…

Keeping your guests entertained is an important part of your wedding day. It’s easy to focus on the evening reception as the time when you will want entertainment, but it’s important not to forget the rest of the day.
I was recently introduced to Alison Russell, an incredibly talented silhouette artist based in London who works her magic at wedding receptions and other social events. Silhouette cutting was a popular tradition during Victorian times, so I love the idea of incorporating Alison’s services into a vintage-themed celebration. Not only would this tie in with the wedding theme, but it would also be a highly original and sophisticated way of entertaining guests during the wedding breakfast.

Unless you’re opting for a very informal atmosphere at your wedding, chances are you’ll be having a seating plan for your wedding breakfast. Your stationery designer will probably be able to create a table plan to match the rest of your wedding stationery, but there are plenty of other options that can add individuality to your reception and also reflect your wedding style or theme. So before you go down the traditional ‘plan on an easel’ route, take a look at some of my favourite seating plan ideas…
