A Wedding Without Flowers?

I recently came across this gorgeous wedding over on Once Wed, which was held in the Californian desert on an old Western movie set. I am loving everything about this wedding, but the bouquet of succulents particularly caught my eye…

Now even though we are having a heat wave at the moment, London doesn’t generally have the weather for a desert-style celebration and a succulent bouquet may look a tad out of place in your Chelsea wedding! However, it’s a fabulous example of an alternative to a floral bouquet. So for those of you who are looking for something different for your wedding, here are my ideas for stylish alternatives to floral decorations…

Plants

Instead of having cut flower displays, place pots of garden flowers or herbs on each guest table. You could even use smaller pots as combined place settings and favours. This would work particularly well for a country garden or rustic style, and seeing as the plants will still be growing after your wedding it’s also eco-friendly.

Fabric or Tissue paper

Use fabric or tissue paper to create flowers that you can then bring together to create bouquets, buttonholes and centrepieces. This would take a lot of time and effort, and is definitely for creative fingers, but the results are beautiful and delicate arrangements without a petal in sight! (If you want to create the centrepiece shown below, check out this DIY guide on Once Wed).

Buttons and Butterflies

I am totally in love with these button bouquets by RBK Creations. I think they’re so cute and fun, and would be fabulous for a laid-back, quirky wedding style.

However, for a more delicate feel I just adore this intricate and eye-catching butterfly bouquet from Martha Stewart.

  1. I went to a wedding a few years ago where feathers and silk flowers in vibrant purple tones were used for the bouquets and table centres. They were stunning and the bride had no problems with preserving her bouquet!

  2. I’m getting married in July & am not having any flowers at the wedding. I’m creating my bouquet out of brooches & pieces given by friends & family, have purchased lovely boutonnieres through Etsy (http://www.etsy.com/listing/33438559/frolic-boutonniere)& am doing mini-candy bars as the centrepieces on each table!

  3. Hi Jenna

Thanks for sharing your ideas – a brooch/jewellery bouquet is a lovely novel idea, and the boutonierres look gorgeous! Perhaps you can send us a photo of how it turns out?

  4. My bridesmaids and I had brooch bouquets for my wedding in September which my sister offered to make for me. They were such a hit that she’s started making them for other people! There’s some of the professional photos on her Facebook page ( http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=190032287698339&set=a.188758754492359.44174.188041254564109&type=1&pid=514735&id=188041254564109 ). It just goes to show that there are beautiful alternatives to flower bouquets!
